FANFICTION - KPOP

Image result for exo fanart
Fanfiction is a term used to describe stories about characters or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than the original creator. This may be a popular series or manga or even a movie or anime. Fanfiction is by no means a recent occurrence, however a more modern form has taken over its true roots, especially with regard to the K-pop universe.
Naturally, fanfiction has become more popular and widespread since the discovery of the Internet and according to one estimate, it is said that fanfiction comprises a shocking one third of all content about books on the Web.
I am aware that this is an extremely sensitive topic, something I found out the hard way after merely making a subjective comment on a popular online English speaking K-pop supporters community. In this article, I will try my best to go into the problems I find that society faces and a trend that I have noticed and find disturbing. This is my personal opinion and my personal reasons as to why I feel negatively towards K-pop fanfiction.
I will begin by defining some terms that occur for those who are not quite familiar with fan fictions:
Slash fiction in almost all fandoms, refers to same-sex male pairings. This is one of the main categories of fiction and refers to the romantic or sexual story elements. The term originates from the slash between the names of the characters in a relationship for example Jong/Key (Shinee’s Jonghyun and Key, a very popular K-pop fanfiction pairing).
Image result for exo fanartThe term kink has a somewhat different connotation in reference to fan fiction than it does in mainstream culture. Sexual situations are often referred to as kinks whether or not they are particularly “adventurous.”
Crossovers are stories that incorporate two or more different sources. In a K-pop fanfiction for example, an author may take a character or their bias from Group A and place him or her in the universe of Group B, or biases from two or more groups may meet at a neutral location with the author or the author and their friends. This may or may not be sexual, and honestly there is some innocent K-pop fanfiction out there. It is not all bad; most are relatively harmless and just good fun.
A lemon or smut on the other hand is a story of explicit nature, often seen as fanfiction for video games, anime or manga. It can range from mild to extreme adult scenes. Lemons are usually rated 18+ and are not recommended for minors.

Let me begin by saying that I completely reject the supposed “normalcy” of sexual fanfictions (particularly those created by minors) as an expression of feelings. My main issue, and the most worrying for me is the demographic that engage in the production of these fanfictions, mostly teenagers/adolescents. We need to ask ourselves what are the moral repercussions of it all. Is it not all just glorified gay porn? Is it right that children (whether they like it or not, if you are under 16 or under 18 you are a minor i.e a child) engage in this explicit behavior? In K-pop fanfiction, slash seems to be the most prevalent. Isn’t this troubling once you look at the ages of the authors?
I cannot however put the blame on the creators of these stories.  As has been said to me “oh, but so-and-so oppas like it”. It is not a surprising conclusion given the forced sexuality of many male idols groups in the music industry, with “chocolate abs” (abs so defined that they look like chocolate bars) on show being the norm. Regular fan service is how they gain their popularity and also how they in turn gain more income. This is a major problem with the K-pop industry and Korea as a whole. There is a strong movement against homosexuality, yet homoerotic fanservice is acceptable? Isn’t that the reason for the vast selection of Tumblrs dedicated to male on male “One True Pairings”?  The companies are really the ones that enforce these ideas but in an underhanded way that denies what’s truly going on. It is what it is, a corruption of youth. Then in return, naïve fangirls go around pretending that they know the workings of the K-pop world when in fact they don’t. Annoyingly this entire situation seems a bit “what came first, the chicken or the egg”.
I am not slamming fanfiction writing as a pastime, but I have to admit that to me sexual fanfictions written by underage fans who really know nothing about sex (and shouldn’t at their age), is disturbing. Even more disturbing is that sometimes these stories are being written about underage boys. Another scenario to consider, underage fans writing stories concerning idols twice their age? That just isn’t right. It creates unrealistic fantasies in their heads and given the chance these fans might actually act on it. The people they are writing about are real. Look at the situation in Korea with sasaeng (stalker) fans. Can you imagine if an idol got caught in an awkward situation with a lovestruck minor?
All in all I’m finding it increasingly difficult to think about K-pop related “fanfiction” in general and not immediately have the thought “no impact on the world other than taking out the sexual frustrations of teens and preteens” come to mind.

EXO CALL ME BABY MV

Courtesy of SMTOWN via YouTubeCourtesy of SMTOWN via YouTube
On March 30, 2015, the boys of EXO made a return with their second studio album, EXODUS. The lead track, “Call Me Baby,” is about a man opening his heart to the woman who brightened his life up.
EXO is a unique idol group; there are ten members split into two sub-groups: EXO-M and EXO-K. EXO-M promotes in China and EXO-K promotes in Korea with the same track that is sung in either Korean or Chinese. And sometimes the two sub-units will join together to release a track.
The two music videos for the track is essentially the same video, with the four same scenes being used: car garage, sitting room/stairway, large open brick room and a large open white room. Although the two videos are identical, there are a couple of differences. The first difference is the car at the beginning; the Korean version has a white car and the Chinese version has a red car. The second is the different positioning of the group members in the scenes; the Korean members are featured more in the Korean version and the Chinese members are featured more in the Chinese version. Although, unless you know which member is which, the viewer would not be able to tell the difference between the members positioning in the video.
SM Entertainment has gone for a very simple music video; there is no story line utilized in the video, but the viewers’ focus has been directed entirely to the dance routine EXO performs. While filming the video, EXO has gone for a perceived one-shot camera angle; as though the entire video was shot in one take, EXO have used this technique for a previous track release with very high success. The one-shot perception would have been more believable, if it were not for the scene and outfit changes that occurred throughout the video.
With the video focused on the choreography, there are very few options the director can choose to make the video stand out more. A lot has gone into the group members’ fashion style, so it blends in smoothly with the flow of the video. The overall fashion choices for the group members is inspired by modern fashion trends, but in one of last group scenes, the outfit choices have been inspired by fashion trends from the ’90’s.
The music for the track has a heavy piano/keyboard beat, with other bass-type instruments mixed together to create a dance beat that is addictive, making the listeners want to get up and dance. The heavy dance bass sound goes well with the video, as the video is a focused dance choreography video.
The translated lyrics are: “You make me exist as myself, / you’re the only one in my world / You’re the one, You’re the one / Girl you’re the one I want”, “Baby girl, even among all the greed / and all the words / You showed that you believe in me.” These lyrics talk about a man being in love and the woman making the man’s world better. However, unless you understand or look up the translated lyrics, the listener would not understand that this track is a love song.

Hyunseung "You're The First" MV

20150510_seoulbeats_hyunseung
With Beast in between comebacks, it was only a matter of time until one of the members gifted fans with a solo project. That member turned out to be the multi-talented Hyunseung, best known outside of Beast as one half of the duo Trouble Maker.
It is because of Hyunseung’s Trouble Maker activities that this does not feel like a solo debut. Or perhaps it is the confidence with which Hyunseung performs that dissolves any notion of “You’re the First” being a debut. Whatever the reason, it’s no exaggeration to say that Hyunseung’s solo debut is both impressive and enjoyable.
The music video follows a lovestruck Hyunseung as he tries to win the heart of his affections, actress Hwang Seung-eon. At first, she fends off his advances with an amused air before falling for him later in the video. Their push-and-pull relationship is entertaining to watch especially because Hyunseung respected her boundaries for the most part.
While there were two objectifying shots of Seung-eon’s breast and thighs, overall, the MV did a good job of giving her agency. Because of this, the brief shots did not register as a large issue of the video. What I could not understand, however, was Hyunseung writing ‘Holla’ on her body. Out of all the lyrics in “You’re the First,” he chose ‘holla’ instead of something that made sense. And on top of that, he wrote with a crayon?
20150510_seoulbeats_hyunseung
At least the aforementioned scene is not as nonsensical as the shots of Hyunseung boxing the walls during Giriboy‘s rap. I think it is supposed to signify Hyunseung’s energy and sexual frustration but then again, I may be reading too much into it.
And speaking of Giriboy, his rap was good but forgettable. Neither his rap nor his scenes stood out; this MV was Hyunseung’s through and through.
The best scene of the MV is the ending scene in which Hyunseung falls asleep on the couch. Pushing down an erection, he wakes, believing that getting the girl had all been a dream. But when he turns around, he sees her on his sex swing, clothed in just a shirt, implying the two had done the deed.
I find this scene interesting for two reasons: the fakeout and the implied erection. The MV deceives the viewer, leading us to believe that Hyunseung only dreamed of succeeding with his crush only to immediately play with the narrative again, showing us that he truly did succeed. The implied erection is interesting because I cannot recall a music video where male idols physically allude to an erection. Sure, there are music videos filled with tons of pelvic thrusts and crotch grabs, but nothing this implicit.
20150510_seoulbeats_hyunseungOf course, the argument could be made that Hyunseung is trying too hard to be seen as a mature and sexy adult and the erection is a way of showing how “edgy” he is.
I can see why some fans may think this, especially when this is juxtaposed with scenes of Hyunseung’s childishness — just look at his face as he writes on Seung-eon. To me, however, Hyunseung captures the young adult male essence perfectly. What early-twenties man isn’t a mix of childishness and maturity?
In addition to an enjoyable music video, the song is catchy as well. Hyunseung’s unique timbre is on perfect display, especially in his part after Giriboy’s rap. The chorus may come off as repetitive, especially with the synth and trap beats, but I find it oddly engaging. “You’re the First” isn’t groundbreaking artistry, but it’s fun and catchy — the perfect song to usher in the beginning of summer.
“You’re the First” doesn’t feel like a debut for Hyunseung because of his presence in the K-pop industry and his stellar live performances; his vocals are incredibly stable for the amount of dancing he does on stage. The MV for “You’re the First” captures the fun of the song, making for a light and entertaining view, while the addictive beat draws the listener in. “You’re the First” isn’t going to be song of the year but it’s a lively listen, perfect for a summer pool party.

BTS - IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE

Track List:
1. Intro: In The Mood For Love
2. I Need U
3. Hold Me Tight
4. SKIT: Expectation!
5. Sick
6. BTS Diss
7. Converse High
8. Move
9. Outro : Love is Not Over

BTS is 'In The Mood For Love (HwaYangYeonHwa Pt 1),' dropping their third mini-album. The boys took an active hand in the lyrics, composition, and arrangement of the highly anticipated nine-track release.

The "Intro" is a frantically rapped introspective track, comparing life to a game of hoops, finally asking at the end of the song if the rapper is happy. Short answer: yes, he is.

"I Need U" is the title track and a dynamic song. The boys rap about not wanting her back, about how they still can't say it, and they argue with themselves because their girls treat them like doggie doo. When the raps subside, the song hits a perfectly timed harmony for the chorus.

Track three, "Hold Me Tight," is a slower tune with synth snaps and the sick raps laid down by the boys. There's a chugging synth line that runs behind it, too. One of the better attempts I've heard at attempting to combine ballad and hip-hop.

The next track, "Skit: Expectation" is some sort of audio skit put on by the boys. It has defied my attempts at translation, so I don't know if it's happy, sad, funny or dumb. Hopefully by the time you see this, you'll know what they're saying. When you find out, let me know.

"Sick" has sassy horns and angry-sounding, mocking raps. It's a playful song, where they talk about how...

"We're sick with work for half our days
We live sick in our studios, our youth may rot away
But thanks to that, we're running to success."

After this they say it's sick (nice wordplay), meaning it's cool.

"BTS Diss" is a lively tune about having fun. It's got great time-changes, insolent horns, and an awesome (if silly) hook: "We're here, the fun boys!" I thought they were saying "wassup?" instead of "wasseo" (We're here) until I looked up lyrics.

We move to the funky song "Converse High." When I first read the title, I was imagining a high school where all they rock is high-priced athletic wear. Came to find out the song really is all about Converse high-tops (and the girl wearing them), but the boys advise us: "...when you meet me, don't wear Converse shoes/It's too hard to take them off of you." ;)

"Move" is a smooth tune. I particularly like this one because it's about moving from being a trainee to something better. Write what you know, right? It's probably tempting to go with something easy like lost love or desire. Instead it's a more personal track, and it feels like they mean it.

"Outro" is probably the least interesting track musically. It's more a pure ballad with an absence of rap or at least a fast tempo to keep it moving. It's sweetly and earnestly sung with the smooth harmonies we've come to expect in pop. Still, I'm not much for ballads.

This was highly enjoyable and contained a few nice surprises. Playful, funky, clever, soul-searching, even a bit naughty. The subject matter they tackle elevates it a bit above the rabble. Really, its pretty easy to sing about girls all day long, and there's no shortage of lyrics to crib from. The beats and raps are awesome, besides. While "Converse High" may be a bit excessively playful, this is still a collection of great, enjoyable tracks with some incredible hooks. You owe it to yourself to at least give it a spin.

BIGBANG LOSER MV

bbmade
Kpop royalty BIGBANG under YG Entertainment has recently revealed their awaited comeback songs “Loser” and “Bae Bae” for the ‘M’ part of their comeback project “MADE – Series” last May 1.
GD LOSERLet’s take a look on BIGBANG’s “Loser” music video.
In the MV, all of the five members has been shown to have different struggles.
In G-Dragon’s part, he feels alone and depressed. Although he has money and fame, he becomes lonely as he does not have anyone by side. His part also goes, I was always alone. It’s been a long time since I’ve forgotten about love.”

He is seen walking around aimlessly and sometimes he lies on the floor. This shows that he does not know where he should be going, thus making him feel like a loser.
On Taeyang’s case, he was confused and had doubts with his faith. I hold out my hand, But no one holds it,” just like in GD’s case, he was alone and did not know where he should go to ask for help. At the end, he loses his battle against his own self and commits suicide.

T.O.P. on the other hand was shown to be a womanizer.Love them for one night, and hate them when morning comes.”
It was also shown that he was a perfectionist, or someone with OCD. He was wearing white gloves, probably so that he would not get dirty. Everything in his house was covered and it was all in white.
Taeyang LOSERTOP LOSER
The two girls were also wearing white, signifying that T.O.P. also views them as objects. When they started to touch him and his things, he got mad and disposed of them. He breaks down as he started to realize what he has done and what he has lost.
Meanwhile, Daesung was being bullied which makes him feel like a loser. At some point I’ve gotten scared of people’s eyes,” he becomes afraid of what people would do to him. While looking at the mirror, he decides to fight back although he knows that he was not going to win.
Daesung LOSER

At the end he still got beaten up, the white handkerchief was also seen to be given to Daesung by someone who is important to him. He holds on into the handkerchief for support although he is still frustrated.
Seungri LOSER
In Seungri’s story, he still chases for his ex-girlfriend who already has found someone new. He become obsessive, calling her every now and then.
When he finally confronts his ex, she tells him that he does not want him back, thus making Seungri angry and becoming violent as he smashes up things.
At the end, the five members all gave in of their personal struggles, thus becoming ‘Losers’ in their own ways.

Light Stick - Glow Stick

A glow stick is a self-contained, short-term light-source. It consists of a translucent plastic tube containing isolated substances that, when combined, make light through chemiluminescence, so it does not require an external energy source. The light cannot be turned off, and can be used only once. Glow sticks are often used for recreation, but may also be relied upon for light during military, police, fire, or EMS operations.

History

Bis(2,4,5-trichlorophenyl-6-carbopentoxyphenyl)oxalate, trademarked "Cyalume", was invented by Michael M. Rauhutand Laszlo J. Bollyky of American Cyanamid, based on work by Edwin A. Chandross of Bell Labs. Other early work on chemiluminescence was carried out at the same time, by researchers under Herbert Richter at China Lake Naval Weapons Center.

Several US patents for "glow stick" type devices were received by various inventors. Most of these are assigned to the US Navy. The earliest patent lists Bernard Dubrow and Eugene Daniel Guth as having invented a Packaged Chemiluminescent Material in June 1965 (Patent 3,774,022). In October 1973, Clarence W. Gilliam, David Iba Sr., and Thomas N. Hall were registered as inventors of the Chemical Lighting Device (Patent 3,764,796). In June, 1974 a patent for a Chemiluminescent Device was issued with Herbert P. Richter and Ruth E. Tedrick listed as the inventors (Patent 3,819,925).

In January 1976, a patent was issued for the Chemiluminescent Signal Device, with Vincent J. Esposito, Steven M. Little, and John H. Lyons listed as the inventors (Patent 3,933,118). This patent recommended a single glass ampoule that is suspended in a second substance, that when broken and mixed together, provide the chemiluminescent light. The design also included a stand for the signal device so it could be thrown from a moving vehicle and remain standing in an upright position on the road. The idea was this would replace traditional emergency roadside flares and would be superior, since it was not a fire hazard, would be easier and safer to deploy, and would not be made ineffective if struck by passing vehicles. This design, with its single glass ampoule inside a plastic tube filled with a second substance that when bent breaks the glass and then is shaken to mix the substances, most closely resembles the typical glow stick sold today.

In December 1977 a patent was issued for a Chemical Light Device with Richard Taylor Van Zandt as the inventor (Patent 4,064,428). This design alteration features a steel ball that shatters the glass ampoule when the glow stick is exposed to a predetermined level of shock; an example of its use being that an arrow can be flown dark but illuminate its landing location upon sudden deceleration.

https://hanmyeolchi.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/light-stick-kpop.jpgGlowsticking is the use of glow sticks in dancing. This is one of their most widely known uses in popular culture, as they are frequently used for entertainment at parties (in particular raves), concerts, and dance clubs. They are used by marching band conductors for evening performances; glow sticks are also used in festivals and celebrations around the world. Glow sticks also serve multiple functions as toys, readily visible night-time warnings to motorists, and luminous markings that enable parents to keep track of their children. Yet another use is for balloon-carried light effects. Glow sticks are also used to create special effects in low light photography and film.

The Guinness Book of Records says the world's largest glow stick, 8 ft 4 in tall, was built and illuminated at the opening ceremony of the second Bang Face Weekender at a holiday park in Camber Sands, East Sussex, England, on April 24, 2009.
